A 15-year-old boy identified as Goodluck Bison has allegedly attacked and raped a 14-year-old girl, leaving her with severe injuries in Ebonyi State.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on August 28, when Goodluck, the son of an army official named Patrick Bisong, forced entry into his neighbour’s house by tearing the net of their window.
Masefan Moses, the survivor’s uncle, said, “While the suspect saw 14-year-old Mercy Vangervihi fast asleep, he snuck into the house’s kitchen, picked up a pestle, and entered Mercy’s room. He then hit Mercy with the pestle and raped her while she was in bed.”
reports that the commotion attracted the attention of local residents, who initially feared a thief was in the house.
Moses said, “I opened the door and found her lying on the floor, with blood streaming from her ears.”
He continued, “I noticed bathroom slippers by the door and suspected someone might still be inside. I searched the house thoroughly and soon discovered the boy hiding in a drum in the bathroom. I pulled him out, and the military from the barracks took him into custody.”
He explained that after discovering Mercy’s brutalized state and arrest the culprit, Mercy’s family rushed her to Paulsonic Hospital Limited in Enugu for emergency treatment.
Moses explained that they first attempted to take her to a teaching hospital in Ebonyi, but it was closed due to a strike.
“We took her to Paulsonic Hospital in Enugu, where she remained unconscious for over twenty-four hours. She was diagnosed with a head injury and urgently needed surgery. After forty-eight hours, she has received treatment to ease her pain and has regained consciousness, though she remains in constant pain and continues to cry,” he said.
He said a computed tomography (CT) scan from Salt City Diagnostic Consultant in Ebonyi State, signed by Oboke S.O., diagnosed Mercy with “Acute Epidural Hematoma,” a collection of blood in the epidural space.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, an Epidural Hematoma (EDH) can be life-threatening and typically requires immediate treatment. Without intervention, it can lead to brain damage or death, with up to 15% of cases resulting in fatality.
“While the bleeding from her ears has ceased, her eyes and cheeks are swollen from the injuries. She can only eat pap (maize puree),” Moses added.
Meanwhile, Happiness Vangervihi, Mercy’s elder sister, stated, “The doctors have only checked on her once to confirm the deposit. They remain firm in their stance, and we are seeking assistance as we cannot afford the necessary care.”
When Reporters contacted the spokesperson for the Police State Command, DSP Ukandu Joshua, to confirm the incident, he said, “I’m not aware of that. Thank you.”
