A recent study from Lund University reveals that reducing sugar and starch intake can significantly alleviate Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms, rivaling the effectiveness of the popular FODMAP diet.
Study Findings:
- 155 IBS patients followed either the starch and sucrose-reduced diet (SSRD) or Low FODMAP diet for four weeks.
- Both diets improved symptoms in 75-80% of patients.
- SSRD led to greater weight loss and reduced sugar cravings.
A Simpler Approach to IBS Management
Professor Bodil Ohlsson notes, “SSRD is easy to understand and follow. You can eat everything, just less of certain things… rest your stomach and indulge occasionally.”
Key Benefits of SSRD:
- Easier to follow than FODMAP
- Greater weight loss
- Reduced sugar cravings
- Less restrictive, allowing for occasional indulgence
