New Study Warns of Risks Despite Cannabis’s Natural Origin

A recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics has found a significant link between prenatal cannabis exposure and poorer cognitive and behavioral outcomes in children. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital discovered that children exposed to cannabis in the womb were more likely to experience:

  1. Reduced cognitive abilities
  2. Impulse control issues
  3. Attention span challenges
  4. Increased aggressive behavior

The Risks of Cannabis Use During Pregnancy

Despite cannabis’s natural origin, healthcare providers strongly advise against its use during pregnancy due to potential risks to both mother and child. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists caution against cannabis use during pregnancy.

Study Findings

The study assessed preschool-aged children’s behaviors and skills related to:

  1. Impulse control
  2. Attention
  3. Problem-solving
  4. Emotional management

Results showed that children exposed to cannabis had more difficulty controlling impulses, paying attention, and planning, and exhibited increased aggressive behavior.

Expert Insights

“Although cannabis is a natural product, there are still many risks to using it during pregnancy,” said Dr. Sarah Keim, principal investigator and lead author. “Consulting with a healthcare provider to find safer options to help with issues during pregnancy is important.”

Conclusion

Prenatal cannabis exposure poses significant risks to children’s cognitive and behavioral development. Expectant mothers should consult their healthcare providers for safer alternatives to manage pregnancy-related issues.
