The Dark Side of Turkey: Why You Might Want to Think Twice This Thanksgiving

As Thanksgiving approaches, many of us are looking forward to gathering around the table with loved ones and enjoying a delicious meal. But have you ever stopped to think about the safety of your turkey?

A recent survey conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and Morning Consult revealed some shocking findings. Despite the fact that over 60% of U.S. adults say they would avoid eating turkey if they knew it was contaminated with feces, more than half of store-bought ground turkey contains fecal bacteria.

The Alarming Truth About Turkey Contamination

Research conducted by Consumer Reports in 2013 found that more than half of store-bought packages of raw ground turkey meat and patties tested positive for bacteria that indicate fecal contamination. And it’s not just ground turkey – whole turkey carcasses can also be contaminated with fecal bacteria when the birds are slaughtered.

The Health Risks Associated with Turkey Consumption

So what does this mean for your health? According to Roxanne Becker, MBChB, DipIBLM, with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, “E. coli in meat has been linked to urinary tract infections. And while it’s sometimes promoted as a healthy source of protein, a single serving of turkey can contain up to 80 milligrams of cholesterol, a waxy substance that can clog arteries and lead to heart attack or stroke.”

A Plant-Based Alternative for a Healthier Thanksgiving

So what can you do instead? The Physicians Committee recommends considering a fully plant-based and healthful Thanksgiving. Not only will you avoid the risk of fecal contamination, but you’ll also be reducing your intake of cholesterol and saturated fat.
