Living near a major airport may come with a significant health risk, according to a new study by University College London (UCL). Researchers have found that exposure to high levels of aircraft noise can lead to serious heart problems, including stiffer heart muscles and poorer heart function.
The Study
The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), analyzed heart imaging data from over 3,600 individuals living near four major airports in England. The researchers compared the heart health of participants living in areas with high aircraft noise levels to those in quieter neighborhoods, revealing significant differences linked to noise exposure.
The Findings
The study found that those who lived in areas with higher than recommended aircraft noise levels had stiffer and thicker heart muscles that contracted and expanded less easily. This was especially the case for people exposed to higher aircraft noise at night, potentially due to impaired sleep and increased stress.
The Risks
The researchers warn that these types of heart abnormalities can result in a two- to four-fold increased risk of a major cardiac event, such as a heart attack, life-threatening heart rhythms, or stroke.
The Causes
While the study cannot pinpoint the exact cause of the link between aircraft noise and heart problems, the researchers suggest that noise exposure may trigger stress responses, leading to an over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system. This can cause blood pressure to rise, arteries to constrict or dilate, and slower digestion.
The Implications
The study’s findings have significant implications for the millions of people who live close to airports or under flight paths. The researchers call for concerted efforts from government and industry to reduce exposure to aircraft noise and mitigate its impact on public health.
Protecting Your Heart Health
While the study’s findings are concerning, there are established ways to look after your heart health. These include:
- Eating a healthy and balanced diet
- Keeping physically active
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Giving up smoking
- Reducing alcohol consumption
- Keeping conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes under control
- Taking medication as prescribed by your doctor
